Listen together on Spotify Web Player, in sync

Sharing a song with a link means everyone hears it at a different moment. With Popmelon, a free browser extension, you start a party, share one link and listen together on Spotify Web Player, each on your own account. Popmelon keeps everyone’s player on the same second in desktop Chrome, Brave or another Chromium browser, while you chat, react and talk on free video and voice calls.

At a glance

  • Cost: Popmelon is free to use, video and voice calls included. Spotify plans are separate.
  • Who needs what: everyone needs Popmelon with a Google sign-in, and their own Spotify account.
  • Where it works: Spotify Web Player in desktop Chrome, Brave and other Chromium browsers, version 116 or later. It doesn’t work in the Spotify app or on phones.
  • Talking: text chat, emoji reactions and free video and voice calls.

What everyone needs

  • A computer with a Chromium browser. Chrome, Brave or another Chromium-based browser, version 116 or later. Popmelon doesn’t run on phones, tablets, TVs, Safari or Firefox.
  • Popmelon, and a Google sign-in. Everyone adds their own copy from the Chrome Web Store and signs in with Google the first time they start or join a party.
  • Their own Spotify account, signed in to Spotify Web Player in the same browser. Each person’s own Spotify plan and its rules still apply.
  • Headphones, if you’ll be on a call. They keep the music from echoing into your microphone.

How to start a listening party in 5 steps

  1. Add and pin Popmelon. Add Popmelon from the Chrome Web Store, then pin it from your browser’s extensions menu (the puzzle-piece icon).
  2. Start a party. Click the Popmelon icon and choose Start a party. The first time, it asks you to sign in with Google.
  3. Share the party link. Click Copy party link and paste it into your group chat. Friends open it and click Join party.
  4. Choose Spotify. In the party room, pick Spotify. Popmelon opens Spotify Web Player; sign in if it asks, and find an album, playlist or song.
  5. Press play. Everyone’s Spotify Web Player follows. A friend whose tab isn’t open yet clicks Go to Spotify tab in the party room.

What it’s like during the party

  • Anyone can take a turn. By default, anyone in the party can play, pause or skip, and everyone sees who did it. The host can change Who can play, pause and skip to Only you.
  • Talk between tracks. Click Join call for video or voice; your microphone and camera stay off until you turn them on.
  • Switch from music to a film. When the album ends, move to YouTube or Netflix in the same party, with the same link and chat.

Listening party ideas

  • Album night: one full album, start to finish, no skipping, then talk about it on the call.
  • New release day: press play on a favourite artist’s new album at the same moment.
  • Playlist swap: everyone brings three songs and tells the story behind one.
  • Take turns as DJ: pass the host to whoever has the next pick.
  • A warm-up before movie night, while everyone arrives.

Honest limits

  • Spotify Web Player only. Popmelon works in the browser, not in the Spotify desktop or phone apps.
  • Desktop only, for now. There are no phone, tablet or TV apps, and Popmelon doesn’t work in Safari or Firefox.
  • Everyone uses their own Spotify account, and each person’s plan still decides things like ads.
  • Popmelon is new. If something doesn’t work, the help page covers the usual fixes and how to reach us.
