Sync that holds

Drift under 400 ms is left alone because nobody can perceive it. Past that, playback speed is nudged a few percent so everyone glides back together instead of jumping. Only a real gap gets a hard seek.

Talk while you watch

Chat down the side, or turn on voice and actually talk. Video too, if you want to see the exact moment someone's face drops. Voice always starts muted.

Follows the show

When an episode ends and the next one starts, the party comes with you. Change what you're watching and everyone follows.

How it works

  1. Start a party

    Open something on Netflix or YouTube, press play, and hit Start party.

  2. Send the link

    It's just the page you're on with a room code attached. Anyone with it can join.

  3. Press play once

    From then on, pause, seek and skip are shared. Everyone stays on the same second.

The video never touches our server

This is the part worth understanding, because it's the difference between Popmelon and something that would get taken down.

We don't stream, relay or record anything. We can't — the video is DRM-protected inside your browser and unreadable from an extension. Everyone in a party is playing their own copy, from their own account. What travels between you is a position in time, which is the same information as someone shouting “go to forty-one minutes” across a sofa.

There's also no database. Rooms live in memory and are thrown away a minute after the last person leaves. We can't read your chat back afterwards, because there's nothing to read. Signing in is optional, and when you do, we ask Google who you are and nothing else — no mail, no drive, no token that could act on your behalf.

Install

Popmelon isn't on the Chrome Web Store yet. Until it is, you can load it directly — it takes about a minute.

  1. Download the extension from GitHub.

  2. Open chrome://extensions and turn on Developer mode.

  3. Click Load unpacked and choose the extension folder.

You'll need your own Netflix subscription. Popmelon doesn't provide, unlock or share any content.
