Teleparty alternative: an honest comparison with Popmelon
If you watch Netflix or YouTube on a computer and want to talk while you watch without anyone paying, Popmelon is a free Teleparty alternative with voice chat included. In Teleparty’s extension, voice and video chat are part of Teleparty Premium, which its support page listed at $6.59 a month, or $3.99 a month billed yearly ($47.88), on 5 October 2026. If you need phone apps, Safari or services beyond Netflix, YouTube and Spotify Web Player, Teleparty is the better choice today.

Choose Popmelon if…
- You mostly watch Netflix or YouTube, or listen on Spotify Web Player, on a computer.
- You want to talk during the film without anyone paying for a subscription.
- You like to gather first and pick later: start the party, share the link, then decide what to watch.
- You switch between services in one night. The party link and chat stay the same when the host moves from a Netflix film to a YouTube video or a Spotify playlist.
- You use Chrome, Brave or another Chromium browser on desktop.
When Teleparty is the better choice
- You need more services. Teleparty’s Store listing says it syncs 9 services for free and 23 more with Premium. Popmelon covers Netflix, YouTube and Spotify Web Player.
- Someone in your group is on a phone or tablet, or uses Safari. Popmelon is desktop-only and Chromium-only for now.
- You’re hosting a big community screening. Teleparty’s support page says “up to 1000+ friends” can join one party.
- You want a long-established product. Teleparty has 10 million users on the Chrome Web Store. Popmelon is new.
What’s the same
Both are browser extensions that keep each person’s own player in sync, rather than streaming one person’s screen to everyone. So with either one, everyone in the party installs the extension and plays the title from their own account, and ads, plans and regional catalogues still apply. Both work with Spotify too; Teleparty’s Store listing says it has added Spotify support.
What’s different in Popmelon
- Free voice chat. Join the call from the floating Popmelon button on the watch page. Your microphone stays off until you turn it on. Headphones keep the film out of your mic.
- Meet first, choose later. Start a party with nothing playing, share one link, and pick Netflix, YouTube or Spotify from the party room when everyone has arrived.
- One link for the whole night. The host can change videos, songs or services, and nobody needs a new link.
- Pass the remote. A guest can click Request to host, the current host approves, and the host can hand over control at any time.
- Catch-up after ads and buffering. If one person’s player is loading or showing an ad, Popmelon waits for that player and then catches it up with the host.
How to switch
- Add Popmelon from the Chrome Web Store. It’s the same listing for Chrome, Edge and Brave.
- Click the Popmelon icon, choose Start a party, then Copy party link.
- Send the link. Friends open it on their computer, add Popmelon and click Join party.
- In the party room, choose Netflix, YouTube or Spotify, and press play.

Other options
- Screen sharing on Discord, Zoom or Meet needs no extension, but protected video such as Netflix can appear black. Friends also watch your stream rather than their own.
